Theme of International Women’s day 2021

Women play key roles in decision-making, and their active participation drives growth and progress for everyone. The United Nations officially recognized women’s day on March 8th in 1975, and from 1996, they adopted an annual theme. The 2021 Women’s day theme is “Choose to challenge.” This theme challenges every woman to be responsible for their thoughts and actions every day and challenge the world every day. They can challenge gender bias and inequality in the world. On this day, everyone should feel responsible for celebrating women’s achievements and making them feel special and well-deserved. Few women get recognized for their exemplary contributions in various fields. But many women contribute to their well-being of their families and communities selflessly. Women stood-up bravely to combat the pandemic Covid-19 crisis as health care workers, physicians, caregivers, community organizers, etc.

Nobody can make you feel inferior without your conviction - Eleanor Roosevelt

On this occasion of "Choose to Challenge," let us raise our hand to demonstrate that you are committed to standing against gender bias and inequality. We stand united for the cause of women and respect their dignity. Let us all take the Choose to Challenge and provide equal opportunities at home, treat them equally, and acknowledge their contribution to society and the family. The theme reminds us that men and women are equal, and both are important to shape this world into a beautiful planet.

History of International Women’s Day

The International Women's Day (IWD) emerged from a labor movement recognized as an annual event by the United Nations. It was way back in 1908 when 15,000 women marched on New York's city roads for better pay and the right to vote. The idea came from a lady called Clara Zetkin. She suggested that there should be International Women's Day in 1910 at an international conference of working women in Copenhagen. A total of 100 women from 17 countries represented the conference, and all of them unanimously agreed. The first Women's day celebration was done in Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany. The United Nations made this official in 1975, and the first theme was"Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future". International Women's day is celebrated in many nations, and some countries are declared as a national holiday. Chinese Government declares half a day off for the women workers on International Women's Day. In the United States, a presidential proclamation is issued to honor the American women's achievements. Worldwide, the International Day celebrations are done by conducting festivals, fun events, concert performances, conferences, exhibitions, etc. Due to the Pandemic, the possibilities are conducted virtually in most of the countries this year. Such events are conducted by women networking bodies, communities, political parties, educational institutions, corporates, etc.
