Why is a BIRTHDAY important to everyone? Because it’s a time
when a person acknowledges the anniversary of his or her birth. People often
celebrate their birthdays with a gift, party, or some special act.
The idea of celebrating a birthday is a pagan (religious)
tradition. In the past, Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays because of the
link to paganism because as per pagans, evil spirits lurked on days of major
changes, like birthdays. Ancient Greeks believed that every person had a spirit
that attends on people’s birthdays and kept watch.
However, now that people have changed and the mindset has
changed, we all have started taking it in a positive note and started
celebrating their birthdays. Here are the reasons why birthdays should be
celebrated?
Birth is the beginning of life- God has created us to serve
a purpose in this world; every time we celebrate a birthday, it indicates that
it is another chance to fulfill our mission.
It is an expression of thanking God for being born and still
being alive!
Chance for a refresher-Birthdays is a refresher, a chance to
regeneration; so no matter how things went yesterday or last year, we always
can try again.
Acknowledge your existence- Celebrating a birthday is
acknowledging our existence on this earth.
Bond with people on your birthday- it is an opportunity to
bond with friends and family.
BIRTHDAYS AND CAKES!
Can you imagine a birthday celebration without a cake? Can
you imagine your wedding anniversary or an engagement ceremony without a cake?
Yes, A party isn’t just a party without a CAKE! We believe there is no being in
this world who doesn’t like cake... But have you ever wondered how this
tradition of cutting cakes started? Well, this tradition holds back to the time
even before history was recorded. Yes, it’s that old.
FIRST CAKE EVER!
The actual, first birthday cake was made in Germany in the
Middle Ages; the Germans would celebrate birthdays with cake, calling the
celebration Kinder fest. However, the relation between cakes and birthdays may
date back to the ancient Romans. The traditional Roman cakes were a coarse,
bread-like product, and later became a much sweeter version, called
Geburtstagorten.
In the 15th century -
Bakeries in Germany marketed one-layer cakes for birthdays and weddings, and
that's how the modern birthday cake was born.
During the 17th
century - The birthday cake took on its contemporary form with multiple layers,
icing, and decoration with flowers. However, these cakes were only affordable
to wealthy people.
In the 18 century -
Cakes became accessible to the lower class with the industrial revolution and
increase of goods and materials.
Why Candles?
There are various theories related to this. Few scholars
believe that the Greeks would make round cakes to honor Artemis, the goddess of
the moon. The candles on the cake represent the moonlight, and the smoke from
the candles carried their wishes to the God's living in the sky.
Some scholars believe the tradition started in Germany,
wherein a candle on cake represents “the light of life.”
Today, western
cultures celebrate any occasion with cakes, candles, flowers, and songs. The
number of candles (in a birthday cake) usually represents the age of the
birthday boy/girl. People believe that a silent wish must be made while blowing
out the candles; the wish cannot be shared with anyone, or it will not come
true.
Cakes in Different
Cultures!
A simple
single-layered bread-like product has now become a world of complex varieties and
flavors. Different people in different countries celebrate cakes in different
ways!
The typical Chinese birthday pastry is a lotus-paste-filled
bun made of wheat flour and shaped and colored resembling a peach. Rather than
serving one large cake piece, each guest is served their small cakes. In
Western Russia, children are served fruit pies with a birthday greeting carved
into the cake crust. The Swedish birthday cake is pound-shaped cake topped with
marzipan and decorated with a national flag. Birthday pastries of Dutch are
fruit tarts topped with cream.
In India, there are varieties of cakes available. Few people
in villages and small towns still cut the traditional bread cake, whereas city
guys opt for various designs and flavors.
Some popular flavors include red velvet with cream cheese
frosting, vanilla bean with buttercream frosting and the classic chocolate
cakes.
The next time you’re happily celebrating a party with
friends and family, think of the long history of this fun and exciting tradition
and share these stories with your friends...
